Our Work, Piece by Piece

Promises are easy to write. These are photographs from our own workshop table: the pieces as they arrived, the pieces as they left, and the hands and tools in between.

Case Study · Sheffield Silver Plate

A Walker & Hall Teaspoon Set

The piece
Six silver-plated teaspoons and sugar tongs in their original case
The maker
Walker & Hall Ltd, Sheffield
The problem
Years of tarnish dulling the bowls and fine handle detail

Halfway through. Two spoons are still waiting their turn; the difference is the whole point.
A tarnished Walker & Hall Sheffield teaspoon held up before restoration, the rest of the cased set behind it
Before
A restored Walker & Hall teaspoon held in a white cotton glove beside its case and Kudin & Sons care certificate
After
The same teaspoon, before and after, returned with its care certificate.

The Finished Set

Plated silver asks for patience, not force.

Silver plate is a thin layer, so aggressive polishing would simply wear it away. Each spoon was inspected first, then cleaned and finished gently enough to lift the tarnish while keeping the plating, the engraved handle detail and the maker's case exactly as they should be.

Case Study · Decorative Brass

Cranes, a Cat and a Swan

A shelf of brass figurines had faded to a flat, greenish brown. Brass hides its detail under tarnish: feathers, fur and the curve of a neck all disappear. Cleaned and polished, the metal turns warm and golden again, and the fine casting is visible once more.

Dull, tarnished brass figurines and small spoons before cleaning
Before
Brass crane, cat and swan figurines gleaming after cleaning and polishing
After
Tarnish lifted, detail kept.
The Hands Behind It

A Family, Not a Franchise

Volodymyr Kudin and his son Yehor. Kudin & Sons is a family workshop: the name on the sign belongs to the people who carry the tools, set up at your table and do the work.

The Final Edge

After sharpening, every blade is honed on leather by gloved hands, so the edge is clean as well as sharp.
